As a member of the Green Office of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) The Hague for the year 2024-2025, I had the pleasure of participating in the organisation of a “General Assembly on Sustainability & Regenerative Education”, and more specifically to take personally care of the curation of a side-exhibition.
The Green Office is part of a network of student initiatives, militant/oeuvrant for more sustainability within the academic institutions, firstly initiated in Dutch Universities before to extend internationally. The Green Office of the KABK, called “GINKGO - Growing in KABK Green Office”, is the first Green Office founded in a Dutch Art Academy.
To address collectively the issues and challenges that the KABK faces, as one of the most important Dutch Academy of Art & Design, we wanted with the two other members of the Green Office to open a discussion between students, staffs, teachers and the direction.
With the intervention of two guest speakers, Prof. Rolando Vázquez and Selçuk Balamir, and a moderated collective discussion, we addressed the questions of art & design education facing the ecological crisis of our times, sustainable challenges for art & design production, alternative materials & praxises, educative institutions as dominating spaces and the necessity of inclusion and decolonisation of the knowledge & praxises, composting western traditions of domination, activism as an artistic praxis, creation as a collaborative & collective gesture, the garden as a classroom for the living, zoop and other models of ethical and inclusive organizing, perspectives for a regenerative future, etc.
To illustrate this collective discussion, I curated a temporary side-exhibition, displaying works and initiatives of KABK students & staffs addressing those questions in their artistic & design praxis.
