ABOUT
Pierre-Eric Baumann is a French visual artist based in Germany and in The Netherlands. With a research-based and conceptual approach, he combines documentary with experimental photography, print-making, film-making, installations and writing. Drawing on a background in philosophy and anthropology, he develops interdisciplinary investigations of the Anthropocene-Capitalocene & its socio-environmental consequences.
To engage fully with his research, he develops multiple visual languages and seeks out specific media that materially reflect certain aspects of his subject of investigation. More specifically, he appreciates implementing sustainable photography processes, by using plants & natural resources rather than chemicals.
Aside from still visuals, he seeks to deploy, through moving images, an experimental documentary perspective, informed by field-research, interviews and bodies of text. This approach is conveyed through short films and video installations.
To present his work, he likes to extend the boundaries of photography beyond its two-dimensional nature, through spatial installations, whose scenography invites visitors to engage bodily with the work and its subject – and through publications, for which writing is also part of his practice. Depending on the project, he also enjoys working in a collaborative setting with specialists, or within collectives.
He often works as an educator and organises workshops to democratise a more sustainable practice of photography.
Through his practice he seeks to visualise and bring people to experiment the points of rupture that form our contemporary world. By attempting to make his projects accessible to various audiences, he aims to have an impact on our society, towards a more regenerative future.
